Life Story / Obituary
When reflecting on the life of William P. “Bill” Mahoney, it is clear to see that he was a man of great honor, strength, and integrity who dedicated his life to serving others in a variety of capacities. He was a devoted family man who was blessed to share his days with the love of his life with whom he created countless memories that have become priceless treasures. Bill’s life was guided by an unwavering faith that gave way to a generous touch that reached so many others within his path. With what would seem to be the best years yet to come, Bill’s bright light was extinguished much too soon.
The seventies were a time like no other in American history. Major trends such as the growing disillusionment of government, an increased desire to learn more about space, and the continued momentum of the advancements of civil rights and women’s rights were woven throughout the cultural fabric of our nation. This was the time that brought us mood rings, lava lamps, and bellbottom pants. As this unprecedented decade dawned there was much to celebrate for one young family from Rochester, New York, as they announced the birth of a healthy baby boy. William P. was welcomed into the loving arms of his parents, Thomas and Pat Mahoney, and was one of two children in his family including his sister, Tricia.
Bill called the Rochester area home throughout his entire life and attended local schools. It was as a high school student that he met the woman with whom he would share an enduring love. Her name was Jennifer Luehm and together they became high school sweethearts.
Life truly began for Bill when he and Jennie became husband and wife. They were overjoyed to become parents to three wonderful children, Shannon, Tom, and Liam. No matter where life took him, Bill’s family was always a cornerstone in his life, and he was actively involved in the lives of his children. Perhaps what made Bill such an exceptional father was the fact that he was really just a kid at heart. Christmas was such a special time of year in the Mahoney family as this was Bill’s favorite time of year.
In order to support his family, Bill established a career in law enforcement. He worked hard to earn his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Keuka College, located to the southeast of Rochester. Bill served the Rochester community as a member of the Rochester Police Department for 19 years, rising to the rank of sergeant. He also reached out to his community as a local participant in the D.A.R.E. program, the nationwide program dedicated to equipping the youth of society with the life skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. Through his participation, Bill was responsible for providing young people with the tools needed to accomplish their full potential in life.
Those who knew Bill were well aware of his zest for life. He made the most of each day he was given in every way. Aside from his family, there was nothing nearer to Bill’s heart than his faith. Bill was strong in his faith. He enjoyed being actively involved with the Greeting Ministry and the R-Life Group. For the past 2 years Bill had found a real home with his walk with Our Lord Jesus Christ at The Father's House. He looked forward to the worship songs at church. Bill was also an Our Life group leader and a member of both the NRA and the Rochester Police Locust Club.
Although much of Bill’s time centered on his family, he was a man of many interests. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping, hunting, and riding both ATVs and jet skis. Bill was into being physically fit and enjoyed taekwondo, and he also collected Hess trucks.
There were so many things to love about Bill. He was blessed with an amazing memory and could weave a story like no other. Bill was known for his strong convictions and never shied away from standing up for what he felt was right. He loved to laugh and regularly shared his sense of humor with those around him, and he was always so much fun to be around.
The life journey of William Mahoney teaches us that life is truly what we make of it. He never focused his attention on achieving success according to the world’s standards, but spent his time and energy making a positive impact on the world around him. Bill was known for his love for the outdoors, his lively stories, and his deep commitment to doing what is right, but it was his deep love for both his Lord and his family for which he will be remembered most. The timeless legacy he leaves behind will live on in the lives of those who follow him. Bill will be deeply missed by many.
