William "Bill" Schmid

William "Bill" J. Schmid, age 68, of Irons and formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2007 at home after a long battle with cancer. He was born on May 31, 1939 in Grand Rapids, the son of the late William F. and Sophia (Michalak) Schmid. He enlisted in the United States Navy on March 12, 1959 in Chicago, IL and was honorably discharged on March 16, 1965. Bill married Saralyn Roentgen on August 8, 1959 in Grand Rapids at the Blessed Sacrament Church. He was employed by the General Motors Company for 30 years before retiring in January of 1993. Bill is survived by his wife, Saralyn Schmid; three sons, William (Susan) Schmid, Robert (Trish) Schmid, and James Schmid; five grandchildren, Kensingten, Alex, Ashley, Tommy, and Karlee; brother, Frederick (Pat) Schmid; sister, Marlene (Peter) Labinski; sister-in-law, Mary (Daniel) Nameth; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. As per his wishes, Cremation has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee and there are no services planned at this time. The immediate family will have a private service at a later date. Memorial contributions in memory of Bill may be directed to Hospice of Michigan. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Ludington.
