Obituary
Raymond Gerald Split was born in Grand Rapids MI in 1927. The youngest child of Julius Split and Minnie (Baker) Split. He married Joan (Nicholson) Split in 1949. Ray passed away peacefully with his children; Paul Split, Sue Split, Julie Split-Keyes (Robert) and Sara Wingate (John), at his side. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Joan passed away in 2019.
Our dad was a strong, gentle man. He loved to sail his 27' sailboat with family and friends, or solo, on the Pacific Ocean until he was 88. He served in the Navy with the 'Greatest Generation' during WWII. He loved camping and took his family on many adventures across America. He was a beekeeper. He was an amazing pie baker. He was a man of faith. He helped rebuild homes on many mission trips. Our dad could build, or repair, almost anything. Dad had an incredible work ethic. After a 42 year career at Michigan Bell he moved to San Diego in 1990 and became a handyman.
Dad was a quiet man who always made time to be part of your life. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He lived his last year at La Vida Del Mar, in Solana Beach, where he made many new friends. We would like to thank the staff for your fondness and care for our dad.
Shortly after his 90th birthday Ray was asked what allowed him to live such a long time. He replied, "Everything in moderation." It may have felt moderate to dad, but not to others. He lived life to the fullest, touching many lives.
Dad, we love you. We miss you. We will remember you forever.
Our family will gather privately to celebrate his amazing life.
