Life Story / Obituary
In a man’s world of athletics, Heidi Krum gained the respect of her peers by her hard work and determination. She was passionate about life and nothing was going to stand in her way to keep her from living her life to the fullest. She strove for perfection and expected the same effort from others.
Heidi was born on August 15, 1961 in Midland Michigan, the 4th child of Donald and Joan (Desander) Morehouse. While growing up in Midland, she had a carefree childhood and would compete with her older brothers and sisters and other neighborhood children in various games and sporting events. As a teenager, her father introduced her to the game of golf. Golf would soon become a lifelong passion. The opportunity to compete in sports were limited for women in the 1970’s, but during her senior year, golf became a sanctioned sport at her school she was became a member of the team. For several years she held the school record for low score. She also lettered in gymnastics before graduating from Midland High School in 1979.
She then attended Western Michigan University and received her Bachelor degree in 1983 with a major in Public Relations and a double minor in marketing and practical writing. While in college, she worked at the Milham Park Golf Course and her fellow workers encouraged her to pursue golf as a professional. She took their advice and with hard work and determination she was elected in 1987, as only the 3rd woman, to the Michigan PGA. She worked as the assistant Pro at Milham Park Golf Course and then as the head professional at Grand Prairie Golf Course from 1991 until she was physically disabled in 1998. Heidi worked long and tedious hours to perfect her swing and took great pride in her game. She loved the sport of golf and enjoyed teaching the game to anyone who was willing to listen and put in the effort. When teaching, her goal was not see how good one could be, but how much better one could get. Her knowledge of the game and her stickler for mechanics made her to be sought out by many for lessons. One great source of satisfaction was the kids that she helped through the Junior Golf Association. The countless hours required by the program were a labor of love. She wanted to see as many people as possible play the game and play it correctly.
Though she had much respect throughout the community and her peers with her golf accolades, it was her family that she cared about the most. She met Jon Krum in 1982 and after a two-year courtship they were married on October 20th 1984. Through their more than 18 years of marriage they shared many hopes, dreams and struggles. She adored her two children Blake and Grant and was active in their sporting endeavors and school events. Nothing would slow Heidi down nor keep her from living life from the fullest. Even when confined to a wheelchair, Heidi managed to be a devoted wife and mother and was constantly challenging life’s physical boundaries.
Heidi loved her Lord and served Him with enthusiasm and vigor. She, along with her husband, took a step of faith and opened up their home to begin a new church, The Prairie Chapel. This small gathering of people of 10 people in 1996 became the seed to a congregation of now over 240. She enjoyed reading her Bible, participating in Bible Study and listening to gospel music. Through her sickness and disease, Heidi found great comfort and joy in her relationship with the Lord and was an inspiration to those around her.
One always knew where they stood with Heidi. When asked of an opinion, she would talk freely and candidly. She had a definite point of view on many subjects and was not afraid to share her beliefs with others. This open frankness, and her ability to take critique from others brought her much respect among friends and family.
Because of her high energy and her drive to succeed, Heidi enjoyed many interests in life. She was avid skier, enjoyed taking trips and reading books. She enjoyed watching old movies on T.V. and making her home a warm and friendly place to visit and live. Heidi died at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo on Monday, March 17, 2003.
Her family includes her husband Jon, 2 sons: Blake and Grant, her parents Donald and Joan Morehouse of Kalamazoo, 2 brothers: Scott and his wife Karen Morehouse of Kalamazoo and Blane and his wife Kimberly Morehouse of Naples FL, 2 sisters Shannon and her husband Bill Flumerfelt of Rochester MI and Yasha and her husband Troy Amber of Chicago. Many nieces, nephews and good friends also survive her.
Her family will meet friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and on Thursday from 6-8pm at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Vicksburg Chapel and a Celebration of Life Service will be at 1 pm on Friday at the Krum Center in Schoolcraft. Heidi will be buried in the Krum family lot in the Schoolcraft Cemetery.
