Obituary
GROAT - Dr. Frank Groat, 88, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2009. Frank will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, Virginia (Ginny). He was a wonderful father to his five daughters, including the late Nancy Groat, Grand Haven, Barbara Groat, Grand Rapids, Beth (Bill) Maschewske of West Olive, Kathy (Ken) Herman of Suttons Bay, and Ginger (Rick) Toomey of Pecatonica, IL, as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Dr. Groat had a long, successful career in Grand Haven as a Family Practice Physician specializing in obstetrics. Frank proudly served in the Army during World War II, teaching medicine at Fort Sam in San Antonio, TX. He served his community as a school board member and was an Elder and Sunday school teacher at the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven. He traveled extensively inter-nationally during his lifetime for which Rotary International honored him as a Paul Harris Fellow in appreciation for his significant assistance for the better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009, followed by a gathering of family and friends at First Presbyterian Church, 501 Franklin St., Grand Haven, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven, First United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids, or Spectrum Health Hospice.
