SMIT - Edna Knighten Smit, age 78, passed away on Saturday morning June 19, 2010. She is survived by her three children, Nancy, Houston, and Knighten; her daughter-in-law, Suzanne Dovi; her two grandchildren, Hayden and Sophia Dovi-Smit; her siblings-in-law, William Smit, Hazel and John Timmer. A memorial service will be held at Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitations will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 6 to 7 p.m. at Eastern Avenue before the service. Born and raised, with her sisters, Eva and Nancy, in Montgomery, Alabama, Edna graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and began her teaching career in Florida. With the army, Edna next taught in Germany and Spain, then in Japan, where she met the love of her life, Harvey Smit; she married Harvey and served with him on the CRC mission field for 18 years; she continued to teach while in Japan, then, primarily as a reading consultant, for almost twenty years in Forest Hills. A voracious traveler, Dr. Edna Smit visited 89 countries. Memorial contributions may be made to Partners Worldwide, Eastern Ave. Food Pantry, and the Foreign Missions of Eastern Ave. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at Raybrook and Faith Hospice for their loving care.
