MOLHOEK - Barbara (Ley) Molhoek, 68, passed away on September 3, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Daniel Molhoek; two sons, John (Erin) Molhoek of Grand Rapids and Robert (Kari) Molhoek of Minneapolis; six grandsons, William, Henry, Daniel, David, Daniel, and Andrew; a brother, John (Suzie) Ley of Bay City; and a number of nephews and nieces. Barbara was a wonderful loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her gift was encouragement. She brightened the lives of those around her and lifted the spirits of others. Barbara graduated from the University of Michigan in 1964, was married that summer and taught elementary school. While raising her sons, she was active in her community and church. She was a member of the Junior League where she helped start the volunteer program at John Ball Zoo and was a member of the Steketee Guild where she arranged the display window at the Blodgett Hospital Gift Shop. She became a local expert on dyslexia before many people understood it and tutored both students and teachers. During various periods of her life she enjoyed tennis, golf, horseback riding, gardening, hiking, biking and travel. She was an accomplished photographer and displayed some of her nature photographs at ArtPrize. She was active in many capacities at First United Methodist Church and in founding and supporting Cornerstone United Methodist Church, where she was chair of the prayer and care team. Memorial services for Barbara will be held Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Church, 707 E. Beltline. The family will receive visitors at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity of Kent County.
