Life Story / Obituary
With a genuine heart that was as endless as the ocean is blue, Jason “Jay” Schreiner touched the hearts of so many within his reach. He was a passionate man as he was passionate about his family, his friends and making the most of each day he was given. Jay had an adventurous streak and a great sense of humor, many friends and countless hobbies, yet it was the moments he shared with those he loved that meant the world to him. Jay’s absence will be profoundly felt, his bright light extinguished much too soon.
Life during the 1970s in the United States was defined by great change in the fabric of our nation with advancements in civil and women’s rights, and in the continued pursuit of what lay beyond our world as the space program reached new heights. In the fall of 1977, Louis and Dawn (Nidini) Schreiner of Carson City, Michigan were also preparing for a great change in the makeup of their family as they awaited the arrival of their first child. On October 30, 1977, the couple welcomed the birth of their son, Jason Scott. Jay, as he was called, was the older of two boys with his brother, Shawn, joining him when he was two years old.
Jay was a busy, happy boy, who started talking when he was 7 months old and never stopped. With an innate “gift of gab,” he made friends everywhere he went, and was pretty popular in school too. A typical boy, Jay loved playing outside when he wasn’t watching his favorite TV show, the Dukes of Hazzard. Much to his parents’ dismay, he was always trying to climb in the car through the window like in the show. Although his parents divorced when Jay was 4, he always kept a positive attitude, and was a good student in school. He especially enjoyed science and biology in high school. But Jay was a hard worker even from his earliest moments. He and his brother, Shawn, often worked for their Dad at his excavation business, and Jay was frugal with his money in order to buy his first car – a lime green 1973 Mercury Cyclone.
Jay was in his late 20s when his life took an exciting, new direction. He was at a fireworks show when a friend introduced him to Michelle Kimes and with that, their love story had begun. The two were inseparable through their 2-year courtship, and in 2006, Jay and Michelle made their union permanent as they were happily married in Saginaw, Michigan. It wasn’t the two of them for too long though for a year later they were blessed with the births of their twin sons, Dakota and Colten. The boys were 4 when they became big brothers to their sister, Shalynn, in 2011.
It was easy to see that Jay was the “World’s Greatest Dad” to his kids. He took an active role in everything his children did, and taught them good habits and strong values that would guide them through their lives. Jay especially loved to share his adventurous spirit with his family, and he was known to come home from work, pack everyone into the car and set out for parts unknown on a new trek together. For Jay – the sky was the limit and he shot for the stars! Although Jay liked to have fun, work had its place too. With an incredibly admirable work ethic, he provided faithfully for his family as a talented entrepreneur and salesman.
All who knew Jay would agree there were so many things that made him such an amazing man. He was funny, good natured and kind hearted – he would do anything for anyone if asked. His adventurous spirit led him to try new and exciting things, and he never turned down a game of Euchre. Above all else, Jay embraced the love of his family and spent a lifetime making cherished memories which will be forever etched on the hearts of all those he leaves behind.
Jason Scott Schreiner, 35, passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2012, in an automobile accident. He is survived by his wife, Michelle (Kimes); their three children, Dakota, Colten and Shalynn Schreiner; his parents, Louis (Kathy) Schreiner of Bannister and Dawn Nidini of Missouri; sister, Hanna Schreiner; brother, Robert Thompson; mother & father-in-law, Stan (Renae) Kimes; brother-in-law, Matthew Kimes; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Jason was preceded in death by his brother, Shaun Schreiner, and grandparents, Andrew & Marie Schreiner.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak Street, Ovid, MI, with Pastor Bob Wagner officiating.
