Obituary
OLSEN - Ian Christopher Olsen, beloved son, brother, and grandson, left this earth unexpectedly on Friday, March 25 after a struggle with illness. He will be profoundly missed by his parents, Dr. Daniel Olsen and Marcia Olsen; brother, Devon Olsen; and sister, Erika Olsen. Surviving him also are his grandparents, Hal and Sally Olsen, and Nell Dempsey, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Welcoming him in heaven is his grandfather, Thomas E. Dempsey. Also missing him is his beloved dog, Tyr. Dear and loyal friends left behind are Deanna, Mark, Ryan, and the rest of the crew. Ian was a graduate of East Grand Rapids High school, attended Secchia Culinary Institute and also worked as a chef in Grand Rapids as well as in Glen Arbor, Michigan. Ian possessed an inner strength that was uncommon and is still being revealed. He was an extremely loyal friend, and a protector of his mother and sister and brother. He was blessed with extreme intelligence, and incredible gifts including music and art. His many interests included: food, photography, books, history, movies, animals, and Frisbee golf. Ian's uniqueness was recognized and loved by all who knew him. A memorial service for family and friends to honor him is being planned for Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. The location will be the Klise chapel of East Congregational Church, 1005 Giddings SE, Grand Rapids, Rev. Dr. Brian Byrne, officiating. Those wishing to greet the family may do so at the chapel during the hour prior to the service or afterward at his mother's home. Information may be obtained through the Gerst Funeral Home. We request that any memorial contributions in Ian's name be made to the Kent County Humane Society or to Woodland Veterinary Clinic.
